GeniUS Youth

GeniUS! Youth Challenge - What could it look like if we worked together to use all our existing resources differently to create services that meet the needs of young people in York?

Summary and Update

It was a really productive and positive day at our Synergy Surgery: GeniUS! Youth event in partnership with the YorkYouth team on February 6th in Clements Hall, following the 4 weeks of discussion on GeniUS! and the York Youth platform.

There was some high energy workshops and group work from the 50 plus attendees which included school children, police officers, council staff and many others. There was also inspiring presentations from Marcus Romer of the Pilot Theatre and Owen Turner of United by Design.

6 Groups pitched to the Dragon's Den panel at the end of the day with the winning group coming up with an idea to create an award that would recognise excellence in arts and creativity for Young People. To find out more about the challenge and Synergy Surgery please click here

Original Question and Conversation

The Challenge

What could it look like if we worked together to use all our existing resources differently to create services that meet the needs of young people in York?

This current challenge sees the GeniUS York team working with the York Youth Support Services to run their challenge on meeting the needs of young people in York.

Over the next four weeks we are inviting you to take part in this collective process by adding your thoughts and ideas to the discussion below.

What We Need from You!

Your Experiences: How have you seen communities engage young people in York and elsewhere? What have you seen that you like and don’t like? Are there missed opportunities or things you think we could take advantage of?

Your Expertise: What solutions (both technology and non-technology) do you know of that might be applicable in helping to create the new solutions for youth work?  Also, what ideas do you have that HAVEN’T been done before?

Your Enthusiasm: We need your input as to how to create new routes forward, so solution-focussed ideas and positive ways that we can develop these is exactly what we need from you!

  • Hi all,

It was a really productive and positive day yesterday at our Synergy Surgery: GeniUS! Youth event in partnership with the YorkYouth team. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated for working together for the future of youth services in York.

There will be a further on the outcomes of the event on the website here next week.

  • Hi all,

The GeniUS! team and YorkYouth would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this Challenge with your comments, ideas and suggestions.

Today at our Synergy Surgery: GeniUS! Youth event we will be bringing all of this conversation into the room to share with everyone there too, and that will influence the ideas and initiatives we cook up to try with the possibility of coming up with a workable pilot. Keep an eye on on the website here and the @geniusyork twitter account for news of the event today.

We will be in touch with all the GeniUS! community about the outcomes from the day which hopefully will be the start of something great for Youth Services in York.

    Thanks again!

    The GeniUS! team
  • Some good news from the Press today. Three teenagers have secured a £500 grant for a project helping disabled people find volunteering opportunities in York.

There is just less than a week to get your views in on this challenge. How we can meet the needs of young people in York? Let us know with your ideas, solutions and suggestions below!

  • One and other's take on the Yorkyouth challenge ...

  • There's been some more discussion ion the yorkyouth site ...

    http://yorkyouth.ning.com/forum/topics/services-for-lesbain-gay-bis...

We would be very interested on your thought on how to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Young People in York in the future?

    http://yorkyouth.ning.com/forum/topics/premises

As part of our (YSS) offer to groups in the community we are keen to allow access to our buildings when they are not otherwise in use but is this something that other organisations could also consider doing? Is access to suitable buildings an issue for groups? Is this something that needs more discussion?

It would be really useful to have a list of other none CYC buildings and contact numbers that we could call upon. I'm thinking of some of the one to one work that the PSI team do across the city. Sometimes its difficult to find a suitable private space to meet up with their young person.

    Any one with any suggestions?

Simon Page has posted some thoughts about the principles for co-production on the york youth thread.

  • http://yorkyouth.ning.com/forum/topics/what-we-know-about-young-peo... There's a good set of statistics on yorkyouth that tells us what we know about young people nationally ...

What could we do to address this better?

  • Playspace have added some information about their work as well as some issue they are facing at the minute. We've also added some information about what we know about young offenders in York with some rquestions about what we could do to prevent young epopel becoming engaged in offending in the first place. http://j.mp/LTpnB9

  • Sounds like a fantastic amount of work on offer out there Carole!

Thought the following link might also be of interest to people. It's about Bite The Ballot, a social enterprise founded to address the lack of young people voting in Britain.
