Challenge 4 focuses on expanding the work already underway to deal with the city’s transport and environmental challenges, and asks us to think of new and innovative ways to use footfall and / or transport to help generate income and improve the environmental sustainability of the city.
Think about what makes York special - its historic core and footstreets, our various tourist attractions, our great shops and cultural offer, the City Walls, river walks, 7 million tourists, our parks and strays; then also think about our recent innovations that also make York special - our ever expanding park and ride schemes, our extensive cycling network, attractive package of festivals throughout the year, our ever increasing portion of renewable energy generation and are ambitious tree planting programme – Treemendous. These are just some of the city’s assets that help make York Special, but can we use any of these (or all of these) to bring transport, income generation and environmental improvement altogether into one project to solve challenge 4? That’s the challenge and we think we can do this but we want to hear from you on how you think we can achieve this? Think innovation and think never tried before in this city.

Comment by Andyd on February 19, 2012 at 10:29 Su rely the best way to make money for the city from all this visitor footfall (apart from their direct spend) is to make sure that they consider York as a business proposition when they get back home. For example does the Visit York website have a link to the economic development and small business information about us, and our business sector?
Comment by Andyd on February 18, 2012 at 11:32 Copenhagen have real time 'cycle counters' (with a big LCD number display) on key bike routes into the city- Could we get the bike shops in the city or a national cycling organisation to sponsor one or more of these to raise awareness of how many people cycle in York every day? Perhaps could have a similar real time display at the entrance to park and ride sites (where there are bus lanes on the route!) saying 'next bus to the city in x minutes', 'average journey time to the city centre 15mins'....)

They all have trained staff who support people accessing information and services in life-critical areas such as careers and job seeking; health;…
