Cycle counters and air quality indicators

Copenhagen have real time 'cycle counters' (with a big LCD number display) on key bike routes into the city showing the number passing that point since midnight - Could we get the bike shops in the city or a national cycling organisation to sponsor one or more of these to raise awareness of how many people cycle in York every day?

Perhaps could have a similar real time display at the entrance to park and ride sites (where there are bus lanes on the route!) saying 'next bus to the city in x minutes', 'average journey time to the city centre 15mins'....)

One other idea might be to make the counter also have a real time display for Air Quality at that location, with an NO2 'score' that changes colour - green if below 30 mgm3, amber if 30-40 and red if over 40 (the EU limit)

There seemed to be quite a bit of support for this idea but as I suspected, the project team from the posts on the site seem more interested in trips to Rio and building more funding than taking the ideas for York forward. I'd like to be proved wrong of course but its 3 months on now and no sign of anything actually happening.

Might need to be some refinement of the NO2 reading idea as 40mgm3 is the annual average limit with a much higher hourly average threshold. Using a traffic light coding system is best as people can understand that from severe weather warnings, flood warnings etc I think simple slogans to indicate individual actions such as 'switch off at lights' 'walk and cycle for clean air' etc on the body of the sign itself would get the positive actions over well.

Could they collect and display other data in addition to cycle & air quality?

The role of public libraries

There are spaces in communities that are safe and welcoming, that are free and open to everyone.  Spaces where communities can come together, spaces that are trusted by the public.  They have free wifi and free internet access

These are called public libraries and we have 15 of them in York, and 1 on wheels that travels around.

They all have trained staff who support people accessing information and services in life-critical areas such as careers and job seeking; health;…
